Apple Eyes Chromebook Territory with Rumored Low-Cost MacBook
Cupertino, California – Apple is reportedly working on a low-cost MacBook, tentatively named the MacBook SE, to directly challenge the dominance of Chromebooks, particularly in the education sector. This strategic move, rumored since September 2023, aims to provide a more affordable entry point into the macOS ecosystem.
The new laptop could potentially reshape the landscape of student computing. Will this new direction from apple change the education market?
The MacBook Se: Apple’s Answer To Chromebooks?
The proposed low-cost MacBook is designed to be a competitively priced option. Rather than competing with its high-end models, Apple is focusing on undercutting Chromebooks, which are prevalent in classrooms. According to industry analysts, Chromebooks held over 60% of the education market share in 2023. This new macbook would be strategically priced.
To achieve this lower price point, Apple is exploring the use of less premium materials. This could mean opting for a rigid plastic chassis, similar to the Apple Watch SE, rather of the customary aluminum casing.
According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the budget MacBook might be offered in a range of colors. Silver, blue, pink, and yellow are the reported potential options for the chassis.
Kuo anticipates that mass production will begin in late fourth quarter of 2025 or early first quarter of 2026. The company may unveil it sometime in March 2026 during its annual Spring event.
