Apple is preparing a massive product refresh beginning in late 2026, headlined by a redesigned high-end MacBook Ultra featuring an OLED display and touchscreen support. Alongside updated Mac models and an OLED iPad mini, the hardware overhaul targets surging demand for artificial intelligence processing across global markets.
Apple is moving forward with plans for a sweeping hardware refresh starting in fall 2026, aimed at capturing explosive growth in high-performance device demand driven by artificial intelligence workloads.
Beyond standard updates to the MacBook Air, Mac mini, and Mac Studio, Apple is developing a premium high-end laptop that marks its first new high-end laptop design in at least five years. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman expects the device to launch between late 2026 and early 2027, with the later window appearing more likely due to a global memory chip shortage. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo projects mass production to begin by late 2026. Apple last redesigned the MacBook Pro in 2021 with the M1 Pro and M1 Max models.
Branding, Display Technology, and Touch Integration
The upcoming premium laptop is expected to introduce MacBook Ultra
branding; Apple has reportedly decided to market two new high-tier products over the next year: a foldable iPhone and this new portable computer, which would establish a tier above the MacBook Pro for the first time. While the MacBook Ultra
name remains unconfirmed and Apple theoretically could still use MacBook Pro
branding, industry reports indicate the Ultra moniker is highly likely.
The machine is set to become the first Mac equipped with an OLED display, replacing the mini-LED backlighting found in current Pro models. This panel will utilize hybrid OLED technology—combining an oxide TFT backplane with a tandem two-stack OLED structure similar to the iPad Pro—to deliver richer colors, true blacks, higher contrast, and improved power efficiency. Furthermore, the device is slated to introduce direct touch input on the display. Apple is reportedly positioning the machine as touch-friendly, not touch-first,
retaining a conventional clamshell design with a physical keyboard and trackpad.
Hardware Architecture, Processors, and Design Adjustments
Under the hood, the device is expected to ship with the existing M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, as Apple has reportedly scrapped the initial plans for an M6 Pro
and M6 Max
line, accelerating instead toward M7 Pro and M7 Max processors optimized for intensive AI workloads. A second-generation model featuring those upgraded chips is planned for late 2027.
Physical dimensions will also shift. To accommodate touch input without screen wobble, Apple plans to incorporate a reinforced hinge. Meanwhile, the traditional display notch will reportedly disappear, replaced by a hole-punch camera and an interactive, iPhone-style Dynamic Island that expands contextually to surface notifications like Siri alerts and battery status.
Simultaneous Expansion Across the iPad Lineup
Apple’s hardware offensive extends heavily into its tablet ecosystem. The next-generation iPad mini, arriving roughly two years after the model launched in October 2024, will upgrade its display technology from LCD to OLED. According to tech outlet 9to5Mac, this transition represents its most significant evolution in five years, offering deeper blacks and higher contrast ratios for reading and video viewing.
The new iPad mini is expected to feature the A19 Pro or A20 Pro chip to support advanced AI features anticipated with iOS 27. Bloomberg also reports that Apple is testing a water-resistant case design approaching iPhone levels, alongside a vibration-based speaker system designed to eliminate physical speaker holes. While pricing remains unannounced, Apple raised the current iPad mini’s price from $499 to $599 (approximately ¥50,000) last month, and the upcoming OLED model could push costs higher still as consumer demand for AI-capable mobile hardware intensifies.
