Macky Sall, current president of the African Union, expected in Bamako on Monday

The Senegalese President, Macky Sall, currently Chairman of the African Union, will be on an official visit to Mali from Monday, August 15, a concordant source at the Presidency of the Republic of Mali told Anadolu Agency on Friday.

“It will be a 3-hour working visit,” the same source told Anadolu. Note that this is Sall’s first visit to Mali since Colonel Assimi Goïta took power in May 2021.

This visit is announced at a time when Germany has decided to suspend “until further notice” most of its military operations in Mali as part of the UN mission, Minusma (Multidimensional Integrated Mission of the United Nations for Stabilization in Mali).

“The Malian government has once again refused to authorize a flight scheduled for today” which was to ensure a rotation of personnel, said Friday, the German Federal Minister of Defense, Christine Lambrecht.

Lambrecht regrets this new flight refusal despite assurances to the contrary given by the Malian Minister of Defense, Sadio Camara, during a telephone interview this Thursday, August 11.

In February 2022, the Senegalese President, Macky Sall, had urged the Federal Republic of Germany to maintain its troops in Mali, a country in the grip of a serious security crisis during a joint press briefing with his German counterpart, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, visiting Senegal. The President of the African Union is also expected, this Saturday, August 13, in Chad.

Two countries ruled by soldiers since the overthrow of Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta in Mali on August 18, 2020, and following the death of Idriss Déby Itno in Chad on April 20, 2021. Mali has been suspended by the African Union while Chad was not.
