macOS market share has quintupled over the past two decades

If in the world of smartphones, nowadays, there is a true duopoly between iOS and Android, in the world of desktops and notebooks the situation has always been quite different, with Windows dominating the majority of the personal computer market, at least since the mid-1980s.

Even with this dominance of Microsoft, Apple has managed to maintain a considerable share of the market in recent decades, always coming right behind the systems of the company founded by Bill Gates. A new animated graphic, released by the people of VisualCapitalist — and which you can check out on this page —, in turn, helps us understand the evolution of this fight a little better.

According to data gathered by the vehicle, from May 2003 to June 2022, macOS managed to quintuple your market sharealthough it is still far from having the same reach as systems like Windows 10 and 11. If two decades ago the Apple system represented less than 5% of the market, today it already appears with 14.6%.

As you can see, Microsoft’s greatest successes were, by far, Windows XP, 7 and 10, with special emphasis on the former which, at its peak, came to represent almost 80% of the desktop operating system market. macOS, on the other hand, had its boom between 2008 and 2009, and continues to grow, albeit slowly, to this day.

This situation would certainly be reversed if the graph also considered mobile operating systems, since Microsoft gave up on this market in 2019 with the death of Windows 10 Mobile — also known as Windows Phone. Linux and Chrome OS, in turn, appear with very small percentages, although the former has managed to recover well over the last decade.

Interesting, isn’t it?
