French President Emmanuel Macron believes that Moldova’s status as a candidate for accession to the European Union is only possible under certain conditions. “I hope that we can give a clear answer on the issue of accession,” Macron said today in Chisinau, in the presence of his Moldovan colleague Maia Sandu. “It is almost certain that this will be accompanied by conditions before moving on.”
Macron explained that Moldova might not be granted candidate status under normal circumstances, but the situation is assessed differently because of the Russian attack on Ukraine and destabilization. Macron also said that EU enlargement cannot be the only answer for stability on the continent.
Once once more he brought up his proposal for a European political community with shared values. According to Macron, this is regarding cooperation beyond the European Union, which includes energy, freedom of travel and infrastructure. Countries that are more advanced in their efforts to join the EU might also be included.
