Following news of his death, Madonna took to Instagram to remember her longtime collaborator, describing him as otherworldly
and singular.
Recalling the creative partnership that defined a major chapter in her career, she wrote on social media: I had an epiphany when I met you and started working with you. I realized that music did not have to fit into categories or genres. So we created our own.
She added, You pressed a magic button inside of me and I fell into a galaxy of unrealized dreams.
Your music gave me a magic carpet to fly on and I visited many places.

Shaping the Electronic Sound of Ray of Light
Before their major collaboration on Ray of Light, Orbit first remixed Madonna tracks including Justify My Love
and “Erotica.” He then co-produced much of the 1998 album, crafting the electronic soundscape behind songs such as the title track, “Frozen,” and The Power of Good-Bye.
His signature production style incorporated elements of techno, trip-hop, and downtempo.
Reflecting on the recording sessions, Madonna wrote, I sang in ways I’d never sung before. I used words without caring if they made sense or not. In many ways you were my Ray of Light — as was my daughter Lola who was born around this time.
She continued, I was starting a new chapter, I was choosing another road to walk down — and you were right by my side with your crooked teeth and your genius, way of hearing music. The studio was often church like and I would sit in silence, waiting for your ideas to explode out of your keyboard or your guitar and then I would run with them…
A Lengthy Career of Collaborations and Accolades
The success of Ray of Light earned Orbit multiple Grammy Awards and nominations. The project won best pop album and best dance recording at the 1999 Grammy Awards. He later earned another Grammy for Madonna’s single Beautiful Stranger,
featured on the soundtrack for the film Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. Orbit and Madonna continued working together over the following years, contributing to her 2000 album Music, as well as production credits on “American Pie” and tracks for her 2012 album MDNA.
Over his career, Orbit earned seven Grammy nominations and three wins, and sold over 200 million recordings. Starting in the 1980s as a member of Torch Song alongside Laurie Mayer and Grant Gilbert, he built a lengthy list of high-profile collaborations. Beyond Madonna, he worked with artists including Blur, All Saints, U2, Britney Spears, Pink, Robbie Williams, and Ricky Martin. His production credits included the All Saints songs “Pure Shores” and “Black Coffee,” and co-writing and producing the track “Alien” for Britney Spears’s 2013 album Britney Jean. His most recent solo album, The Painter, was released in 2022.
