Madrid | Explosion in a building leaves 18 injured and two missing

Firefighters ordered the evacuation of one of the adjacent buildings, in order to inspect the structure and verify its safety conditions.


A strong explosion occurred on Friday in the attic of a four-storey building in a central area of ​​Madrid, for reasons that are still unknown; so far, 18 people were injured, all with minor injuries except one serious one, while two people are still missing.

Firefighters are working in the building in search of people who may be trapped, following rescuing four of the injured from inside, the emergency services in the capital of Spain said.

Firefighters are therefore looking for two workers who have been trapped in the building on Calle General Pardiñas, in the heart of the Salamanca district.

The cause of the explosion might be due to construction work being carried out in the building, the mayor of the city, José Luis Martínez Almeida, told the media.

Seriously injured

The mayor said that four of the injured were taken to hospitals, including the only serious injury reported; a person who had not been initially located following being thrown out and falling in a courtyard, the mayor said.

Some of the injured residents were also treated in a field hospital set up on site.

The explosion occurred at 1:30 p.m. local time (12:30 GMT) in a building located at the intersection of General Pardiñas and Ayala streets in the Salamanca district, where material damage was reported to street furniture and vehicles parked in the area, although the facade of the block does not appear to be affected.

Sources from the Madrid Emergency Services confirmed that a school very close to the site of the explosion was not evacuated, meaning that the students and teaching staff remained inside.
