Maggie Civantos and Kiti Mánver on feminism and the new women in fiction: “It was necessary” | TV and show

The second season of ‘Express’ comes to streaming during the next days of January and addresses the dark kidnapping crimes that were on the rise in Spain during the 2000s.

On January 20th, the Lionsgate+ premieres second season of Express, the Spanish series that embarks actresses Maggie Civantos and Kiti Mánver on a criminal adventure, where one of them faces severe trauma after being kidnapped.

Also known for playing Macarena Ferreiro in the popular Netflix series Vis a Vis, Civantos is now a criminal psychologist who survived a kidnapping and leads a group dedicated to preventing and controlling this type of crime..

the series is inspired by “express kidnappings”, a crime that was on the rise during the 2000s, especially in Europewhere criminals kidnapped people to get money through extortion.

There also, Barbara -her character in the series- must deal with a powerful and ambitious villain, Mrs. Ortega, played by actress Kiti Mánver. In conversation with BioBioChile, both comment on the importance of new female characters in fiction and their contribution to film and streaming.

I think it’s fantastic that there is diversity and that women are free and not ‘at the service of…’. So in this series all kinds of women are presented, all empowered, but very diverse. In fact, well, there is a heroine and a villain, and well, they both fight and they are both powerful, but from a very different place,” says Civantos.

Likewise, it highlights the importance of these new fictional characters, inspired by reality, being more frequent. “Fortunately, it has recently started to change this on the screen and I think it was necessary. So what Express gets into this catalog of female characters, empowered and who have many things to tell, is really good, ”he adds.

Kiti Mánver for her part, emphasizes adolescents who also mark a presence in this fiction. “I find them very interesting, as they precisely normalize diversity and that is a breather inside that they have some super tremendous plots too. Things happen to them on the edge, very powerful. It seems to me that it is an added value of these series”.

Maggie Civantos and Kiti Mánver advance about their characters in ‘Express 2’

It should be remembered that the first season of the series ended with a rather intense ending, where Barbara’s daughter (Civantos) ends up being kidnapped. There, the protagonist must work to save her family.

Resuming the series was a challenge because we started shooting something that was a direct continuation a year later., but at the same time I also think I felt at home. Because Barbara’s character is so well defined and somehow this intensity also helped me automatically pick up where we left off,” she points out.

Regarding the new directions of his character, he anticipates that “has an evolution towards a need for love or affection, for a certain normality that will not be recovered. And everything is going to get worse, there will be more and more tension, but she makes the effort to have a normal life, she wants to do things well”.

For the villain, the case would be the opposite, says Mánver. “In the case of Mrs. Ortega, I would dare to say that there is a regression. But hey, I think she continues in her tonic of devising and imagining strategies to achieve the power that she wants to achieve, ”she says.

But in this part What I like the most is what Mrs. Ortega does not control, That surprised me in the scripts and I was very interested in how they have been fitting and developing it”, he concluded.
