A major fire occurred this Wednesday morning at the school of the abbey of Flône, in the Liège entity of Amay, according to the Hesbaye Meuse Condroz rescue zone. The firefighters were called to intervene shortly after 8:30 a.m. at the Institute of Christian Instruction.

“Start of fire at Flone Abbey. Teachers and staff obviously put the children in safety, but I hope not too much damage”Carol wrote to us via the orange Alert Us button.

It was in an office that the fire broke out this morning, right next to classes. In a few minutes, it’s panic.

“A student from the class came running and said there was a fire. So we panicked a lot and we went to the yard, but it was panic. I admit that I cried”explains a student.

“So we’re going home and we’ll have an email in the afternoon to find out what’s going to happen for the exam session”says another.

In total, 1,500 students had to be evacuated… It’s quite an organization. A crisis unit has been set up and buses have been sent by neighboring municipalities.
The fire was quickly brought under control thanks to the rapid intervention of the firefighters, who came well equipped.

“Several fire engines, several aerial means, three rescue zones concerned and more than twenty firefighters on site”details Commander Hervé Fanuel, of the HEMECO rescue zone.

Today’s exams have therefore been canceled and the pupils have been gathered a little further, on a former football ground, so that their loved ones can collect them safely.

It remains to be seen how to organize the rest of the exams. A meeting is organized this afternoon to discuss it
