Around 200 firefighters went to a burning warehouse in Berlin-Mariendorf on Thursday evening. With the support of the BER airport fire brigade, the major fire has now been extinguished. The investigation into the cause is ongoing.

The major fire in a warehouse in Berlin-Marienfelde has been extinguished. The Berlin fire department announced this on Friday night on Twitter. In the early hours of the morning, follow-up extinguishing work was still going on. Around 200 emergency services were on site, including the airport fire brigade from BER, according to the Berlin fire brigade.

In the hall of a plastic packaging manufacturer on Sperenberger Strasse, there was a fire on Thursday covering an area of 3,000 square meters. However, the fire brigade was able to prevent the flames from spreading to neighboring halls.

As the manager of the company concerned, Andreas Brunner, told the rbb24 evening show on Thursday evening, the main fires in the hall were wood, cardboard and plastic. The employees alerted the fire brigade and police two minutes after the fire was discovered. They initially tried to extinguish the fire themselves, according to Brunner.

According to the fire department, no one was injured. The authorities had called for windows and doors in the vicinity of the hall to be kept closed. Toxic substances should not have been spread.

How the fire started was still unclear as of Friday morning.

A cloud of dark smoke over southern Berlin was visible from miles away. Because of the heavy smoke, the authorities initially issued an official hazard warning. The cloud of smoke therefore moved from the commercial area on Motzener Straße southeast towards BER Airport.
