Makes Al Qarana an eco-tourism destination | Al Qarana Lagoon, migratory bird sanctuary, is becoming an eco-tourism destination

Doha: The Ministry of Climate Change has announced plans to turn Lake Al Qarana and its environs, one of the favorite destinations for bird watchers and migratory birds, into an eco-resort. The Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Mohd. Falih bin Nasser bin Ahmad bin Ali Al-Thani said. The announcement was made by the minister in connection with an awareness program organized at Fujairah Beach.

Fuwairit Beach, located in the north of Qatar, is one of the most important conservation sites for the endangered Hawksbill turtles. He said various environmental projects would be implemented ahead of the FIFA World Cup, with the aim of combating climate change and ensuring biodiversity. He said the projects would cover all areas including marine environment, wildlife conservation, birds and trees. Karana has three large artificial lakes that hold 24 lakh cubic meters of water. The water comes from the Al Qarana treatment plant. The three lagoons are interconnected.

The arrangement is such that water flows from the first lagoon to the second and then to the third. The regular flow of water and the greenery give a great view. Different species of birds, fish and other creatures have made the lagoons their habitat. In addition to birds, fish have also made the lakes of Karana their habitat. Karana is now a favorite haunt of major migratory birds such as the Osprey, Water Pipit, Purple Heron and Kestrel. Karana is located about 60 km southwest of Doha.

At the same time, the Minister said that steps are being taken to reduce carbon emissions in the energy, transport and renewable sectors and the goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25 per cent by 2030. He also mentioned that there are many plans for the first carbon neutral World Cup in the history of the FIFA World Cup.
