Malaga celebrates the 20th European Congress of Internal Medicine

Internal Medicine wants to improve care for hospitalized patients.

The city of Málaga hosts, between June 8 and 11, the 20th European Congress of Internal Medicine (ECIM 2022) organized by the European Federation of Internal Medicine (EFIM). The congress has more than 2,000 communications and brings together some 1,500 internists from 71 countries from 5 continents.

As stated by the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine (SEEDS), “la Internal Medicine is the core medical specialty from which the different medical specialties. Internal Medicine is characterized by its commitment to maintaining a integrated vision of pathologies, focusing on people rather than diseases. The role of Internal Medicine is essential to complement the current trend towards hyper-specialized clinical care that can lead to medical fragmentation that entails risks for patients and unnecessary costs for the health system.”

Semi defends that “the value and validity of Internal Medicine has been revealed during the covid-19 pandemicin which European internists, and the rest of the world, have led attention of most hospitalized patients with severe disease.

Given the wide field of knowledge of Internal Medicine, pathology topics will be discussed during the congress cardiovascular, geriatrics, systemic diseases, rare diseases, diabetes-obesity, palliative care and, of course, infectious pathology and Covid-19. Emphasis will also be placed on improvement in inpatient carethe development of new forms of care, as well as the implementation of clinical ultrasound.

Recognition to Jaime Merino, former president of SEMI

In the congress will be held joint sessions with the American College of Physicians (ACP), the American Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM), la European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and the European Stroke Organization (IT’S). There will also be a session, organized by the European Federation of Internal Medicine (Fdime) that will have the participation of the Platform of Patient Organizations (POP) of Spain and other European patient associations, to find out their perspective on the Covid-19 pandemic. Likewise, special emphasis will be placed on the role of telemedicine, digital health and artificial intelligence in the Medicine of the Future.

During the congress there will be a recognition to the professional career of the teacher Jaime MerinoProfessor of Medicine at the University of Alicantewho was president of the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine (SEMI) and the EFIM for his exceptional contribution to the development of Spanish and European Internal Medicine.
