Bangkok: Malayalee Abdullah Abu Bakar won gold in the Asian Athletics Championship. Abdullah won gold in triple jump. Abdullah Abu Bakar, a native of Nadapuram, Kozhikode, won the triple jump gold by jumping 16.92 meters, the best performance of the season.
Japan’s Hikaru Ikehata (16.73) took the silver and South Korea’s Kim Jang Woo (16.59) the bronze. Abdullah had won silver in last year’s Commonwealth Games, finishing second behind teammate Eldos Paul. In the absence of Eldos and Praveen Chitravel, India’s hopes rested on the Malayali star.
Day 2 of the Asian Athletics Championships was one of success for India. Apart from Abdullah Abubakar, Jyoti Yaraji won gold in 100m hurdles and Aja won gold in men’s 1500m. Tejaswin won bronze in decathlon and Aishwarya won bronze in 400m.
