The Maldives might be the first nation in the world to disappear by the end of the 21st century. Today, the country is on the verge of another rise in sea levels, which threatens the daily lives of the population and its economy, tourism. The government therefore opted for the construction of artificial islands to counter rising water levels.
Around Malé, the capital, artificial islands are being built by pumping sand from the seabed to meet the current and future needs of the Malé region in terms of tourism, housing, industrial and commercial development, and response to the threat posed by rising sea levels. A mistake for Maldives NGOs, who consider that these mammoth projects will be fatal for the survival of the Maldives.
