A federal grand jury indicted Terry Jon Martin on Tuesday for one count of theft of important works of art for the alleged theft of “an object of cultural heritage from the care, custody or control of a museum,” according to court documents filed in court. of District of Minnesota. The sneakers were then valued at at least $100,000, according to court documents.

Authorities got a lead in the case 13 years later and were able to recover the sneakers during an undercover operation in Minneapolis, CNN previously reported. No suspects were arrested at that time.

At the time of the theft, the sneakers were insured for $1 million, but their current fair market appraisal values ​​them at $3.5 million, according to a news release from the North Dakota District Attorney’s office.

The sneakers are one of four remaining pairs and are considered the most recognizable memorabilia in American movie history, according to the statement.
