Power cuts, business operating problems, these are the consequences of the energy crisis that the governments of the Alliance of Sahel States intend to manage in the near future.

The national electricity companies of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) met in Ouagadougou from February 20 to 22. The main players in the electricity sector in Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso met to share experiences, discuss innovative ideas and common electricity challenges. A meeting which allowed participants to make a number of important decisions to improve the situation in the electricity sector and overcome the crisis. Ideas were transformed into actions with concrete implementation deadlines.

One of the most ambitious projects discussed at the meeting was the construction of a nuclear power plant on the territory of the AES. The project deadline is set for the end of 2034. This is a relatively short deadline for a project of this scale. Especially since the feasibility study of a nuclear power plant common to the AES countries must be carried out no later than December 31, 2024. Here are the measures that the participants in the meeting plan to implement in the future close: launch studies for the construction of coal-fired power plants in Niger by April 30, 2024, complete construction work on the 330 kV Bobo – Sikasso line no later than December 31, 2026, complete construction work on the 330 kV line Niamey – Ouagadougou no later than December 31, 2025, carry out a study for the development of high-power wind power plants by June 30, 2025.

Another point of view confirms the correctness of the strategy chosen by the Alliance countries. Dr Coulidiati Boulkindi, teacher-researcher at the University of Ouagadougou, believes that they must strive to produce their own energy in order to be independent and ensure their economic sovereignty.

By joining forces and having sufficient natural resources, Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso intend to choose the right strategy to overcome the crisis and bring prosperity to their populations.
