The escaped inmate, a person residing illegally in Belgium, was on his way with a transport of prisoners, reports Nieuwsblad. He was to be transferred from Marche-en-Famenne prison, in Wallonia, to the Merksplas closed center for illegal immigrants. For reasons still unknown, the inmate managed to escape.
A large search operation was underway on the E19. The federal police attended the scene en masse with intervention teams. The police abandoned the search operations following a few hours.
