Many Edmonton journalists see Joel Edmundson as a target for the Oilers

If I told you that the Canadian has a surplus of defenders on its blue line, I don’t think anyone here would be in the category of surprised people since it is an important reality right now in Montreal.

By necessity, the most interesting target on paper is Joel Edmundson. After all, the others are either youngsters or veterans whose market value is not as great as their value to the Canadiens.

But in Edmundson’s case, it’s not the same.

His contract is ideal ($3.5 million until 2024) and he has a lot of experience. Whether it’s because of his Stanley Cup ring (2019) or his presence in the final with the CH in 2021, the price that the Flanelle could obtain in return for his services can be interesting.

Obviously, several formations could be in the race since it is a very interesting tool for a coach of defenders. He’s not an offensive quarterback, but he’s a stabilizing force.

It also brings a lot of leadership.

All that to say that according to some sources of journalist Brian Wilde, the Edmonton Oilers (the club against which the CH defender was expelled last Saturday) might have an interest in the Manitoba native.

Three of his contacts in Edmonton believe it’s a possibility.

Does this mean a trade is imminent? Not necessarily. According to a fourth source, the Oilers would first like to see if Philip Broberg has what it takes in the body before venturing into the market.

But clearly, with several top journalists believing in the possibility, one has to start believing that there is a chance of such a scenario happening by the trade deadline.

Remember that the Oilers need defensive reinforcements and grit to move to the next level. And as mentioned, Edmundson has already taken two teams to the next level.

He’s also a western Canadian guy.

Kent Hughes, at the last trade deadline, had danced with the Oilers, who acquired Brett Kulak in return – in particular – for a draft pick, who became… Lane Hutson.

Is Xavier Bourgault, who would be a target of CH, could be at the heart of the discussions involving the defensive defender of the Canadiens? Would the management prefer to go for a first choice? Who knows.
