The European Parliament’s employment committee on Tuesday voted yes to former slaughterhouse workers at Danish Crown in Sæby receiving 23 million from the EU’s support pool for dismissed employees.
This is stated by MEP Marianne Vind (S) in a press release, where she says:
– The EU has an obligation to help, because the EU itself has a responsibility for the layoffs. Among other things, the money will go to retraining, upskilling and job search help and will benefit almost 700 people from North Jutland, says Marianne Vind, who is a member of the European Parliament’s employment committee.
– It is a great tragedy that Danish Crown closed in Sæby. A lot of talented employees have been made redundant. The EU must help them further with retraining, education and help with the job search.
Therefore, the EU is now sending more than DKK 23 million to North Jutland.
Marianne Vind thinks this is completely appropriate, because according to her, the EU also bears part of the responsibility for the closure of the slaughterhouse in Sæby.
She is currently negotiating the EU’s new animal welfare law, and she is concerned that fattening pigs are largely exported abroad rather than being slaughtered locally.

– A big reason why the slaughterhouse closed is that the EU allows animal transport for up to 24 hours. This makes it easy to export pigs to countries with far worse wages and working conditions, while at the same time the animals suffer terrible harm along the way. The EU could just ensure that the pigs are slaughtered closer to the farm. It’s a win-win for both local jobs and animal welfare, she says, adding:
– We have told the EU Commission for a long time that this is a problem. Now they have finally listened and proposed new animal welfare legislation. But it is far from good enough, because in Sæby it is too late. We must continue to fight hard for the local workplaces, so that we do not see the large mass layoffs like the one in Sæby again.
The support will come into effect after the entire European Parliament is expected to approve the decision next month.
