Mao Hamasaki Returns to TV After ICU Poisoning Scare for Series Promotion

Former Japanese AV idol turned DJ Mao Hamasaki stepped onto the stage of HOY 77’s Lim Hoi Fung Q&A Session looking polished and smiling, but her return to the public eye came armed with a pocket-sized drug-testing kit and a stark warning about nightlife safety. Just weeks after a terrifying Halloween period in Hong Kong that landed her in intensive care after she tested positive for four different substances, Hamasaki is determined to draw a hard line against drug use.

The incident unfolded in the early hours of Nov. 1, when Hong Kong law enforcement responded to an emergency call from an entertainment venue at 65 Mody Road in Tsim Sha Tsui. According to reports compiled by on.cc, Hamasaki had finished a DJ set in Wan Chai when a patron invited her to a private venue across the harbor. What was pitched as a casual social gathering quickly turned toxic when Hamasaki consumed a brown drink during a dice game.

Her manager admitted to on.cc that he initially tasted the beverage, mistaking it for a sweet cocktail or whisky, and Hamasaki ultimately drank three glasses in total. After returning to her equipment to perform, Hamasaki collapsed in a state of violent muscle spasms. Hospital tests later found she had tested positive for four drugs, prompting an intensive care unit admission that left the artist shaken and requiring ongoing medical supervision.

Appearing alongside director Ho Kwok Tung and fellow cast members, Hamasaki addressed the ordeal with visible emotion, noting that while most toxins have cleared her system, recovery is an ongoing process. Although most of the toxins have been eliminated from my body, it will take another week to fully recover, Hamasaki told the audience, her voice wavering slightly as she recalled the severity of her ICU admission.

To cope with lingering psychological impacts and occasional flashbacks, Hamasaki pulled out a newly purchased testing tool during the broadcast. Director Ho Kwok Tung quipped that she was carrying a modern version of an ancient silver testing needle used to detect poison. Hamasaki responded with characteristic humor, suggesting that in their series her co-star might pour her tea on screen, and she would need to test each cup first.

Moving from defense to offense, Hamasaki stood up, imitated a signature Aaron Kwok dance move, and delivered an energetic anti-drug slogan in Cantonese: Stand firm, take no drugs!

Expanding Roles Amidst on-Screen Controversy

The television project bringing Hamasaki back into the limelight is the HOY 77 sitcom Your Security Guard Li Po On, which has experienced fluctuating ratings since its premiere. Director Ho Kwok Tung has adjusted strategy to revitalize viewer engagement for his show.

Capitalizing on Hamasaki’s real-world headlines and a viral preview clip showing actor Mak Pui Tung kissing her leg, the production team confirmed plans to expand her screen time. Because the series airs during an early 8 p.m. time slot, television broadcasts previously trimmed several of her bolder scenes. However, Ho announced plans to release an unedited director’s cut to satisfy audience curiosity.

During one intense sequence opposite actor Tsang Tsui Chi, Hamasaki became so immersed in character that she kept going even after the director called cut, drawing playful teasing from the cast.

As law enforcement agencies continue investigating the circumstances of the Tsim Sha Tsui incident under the classification of administering poison with intent to cause harm, Hamasaki’s swift return to work shows persistent resilience. Whether her new advocacy and expanded television presence will alter wider discussions around nightlife security in the city is unclear, but her message to patrons is unmistakably clear.
