María Corina Machado Vows to Return to Venezuela After Deadly Earthquakes

A Nation Jolted by Dual Tremors

María Corina Machado has announced plans to return home to assist in recovery efforts following two earthquakes that struck the country on June 24. While Machado maintains she intends to join the public in mourning and providing aid, U.S. officials have described her proposed return as an “inoportune” move, according to reports from The New York Times.

The Human Toll of the Disaster

The seismic events, registering magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, have triggered a profound humanitarian crisis. Official reports confirm 1,450 fatalities as a direct result of the tremors. Beyond the death toll, the disaster has left 3,150 injured and 12,721 families affected.

A Leader Emerging from Exile

In the immediate aftermath of the quakes, Machado utilized social media to urge unity among the Venezuelan population. She has remained in exile since late 2025, following a period of operating in the country’s underground to avoid detention by the Nicolás Maduro administration following the 2024 elections.

Washington’s Skepticism

Machado, a 2025 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, stated in an interview with Fox that her return is a duty to her country. However, her potential repatriation has faced skepticism from the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Two officials from the Trump administration, speaking to The New York Times on the condition of anonymity, characterized the request for assistance in facilitating her return as “inoportune,” with one official considering it a “political stunt.”

Strained Ties and Security Risks

The debate over Machado’s movement coincides with ongoing discussions regarding the stability of the Venezuelan opposition’s leadership. During a meeting held at the White House last March, U.S. officials expressed concerns regarding Machado’s personal safety.

The U.S. government has maintained a policy of prioritizing engagement with the interim government led by the president encargada of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez. As of now, the administration has not altered its stance regarding the security risks or the political implications of Machado’s stated intent to leave exile.
