More than 120 years after Marie and Pierre Curie isolated radium in a leaky Paris shed, the personal belongings and laboratory notebooks they touched remain radioactive. The story of one of science’s greatest discoveries began in 1898 inside an abandoned dissecting room behind the Municipal School of Industrial Physics and Chemistry in Paris. Marie Curie was a 30-year-old immigrant from Poland seeking a doctoral topic when she began measuring the invisible rays given off by uranium salts. Finding that a heavy black uranium ore known as pitchblende emitted far more radiation than the uranium within it could explain, she and Pierre realized an unknown element remained hidden in the rock.

Because the couple could not afford expensive materials, they arranged for waste ore left over after uranium extraction to be shipped from a mine in Bohemia. Arriving by the cartload mixed with forest floor pine needles, the crushed rock required immense physical labor to process. Marie handled the heavy extraction herself, later writing of the exhausting conditions in a workspace that baked in summer and froze in winter without proper ventilation.

Working through approximately seven to eight tonnes of pitchblende over nearly four years, the couple dissolved, filtered, precipitated, and recrystallized the material repeatedly. By 1902, Marie successfully isolated one-tenth of a gram of pure radium chloride, securing an accurate atomic weight and a permanent place for the new element on the periodic table.

Why the Notebooks and Personal Belongings Remain Radioactive

The extraordinary persistence of the contamination traces directly to the physical properties of radium-226. The isotope possesses a half-life of roughly 1,600 years. Because only a fraction of that span has elapsed since the Curies handled their research materials between 1899 and 1902, the residue left on their papers has decayed by less than five percent.

Radioactive dust settled indiscriminately across the Curies’ environment, contaminating everything from laboratory notebooks and furniture to cookbooks and doorknobs in their old apartment. Today, the Bibliothèque nationale de France preserves the manuscripts inside lead-lined containers. Scholars wishing to examine the hardback notebooks must don protective equipment and execute formal waivers.

The Unrecognized Dangers of a Glowing Discovery

Before the true biological hazards of ionizing radiation were understood, the Curies treated their luminous isolation with a mixture of scientific curiosity and casual familiarity. The shed on rue Lhomond featured glowing shelves where glass tubes and dishes emitted a faint blue-green light.

That glow came at a severe physical cost. Pierre intentionally strapped a radium sample to his arm to observe skin lesions, while Marie routinely carried samples in her pockets and kept them in desk drawers at home. Both suffered raw, inflamed fingertips from handling the material barehanded.

The cumulative exposure eventually proved fatal. Marie Curie died in 1934 at age 66 from aplastic anaemia, an illness widely linked to prolonged radiation exposure. Her daughter, Irène Joliot-Curie, who collaborated with her at the Radium Institute, subsequently died of leukaemia at 58. Pierre had died decades earlier in a 1906 street accident.

Legacy and the Transfer to the Panthéon

Marie Curie’s contributions fundamentally reshaped modern physics, chemistry, and medicine. She coined the term radioactivity, shared the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics with Pierre Curie and Henri Becquerel for their pioneering work on radioactivity, and won the 1911 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for isolating radium and discovering polonium.
