Marijuana use can increase the intensity and prolong female sexual desire, points out a study carried out by Portuguese doctors. The research, led by the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP), in Portugal, pointed out that substances present in the plant interact with female hormones and intensify libido.
The research was published in February in the European Journal of Neuroscience and involved two groups of mice. They had female hormones injected to study the interaction of marijuana-derived substances with estradiol and progesterone. One of the groups did not receive the drug, while the other did.
The study showed that it was THC, precisely the component of cannabis that causes behavioral changes, which was responsible for a “significant increase in sexual desire for male partners”. Libido was “more intense” in animals that received the substance than in those that only had hormone injections.
“What is verified is that THC increases the activation of the mechanisms that trigger the sexual response, at the same time that it increases the inhibition of the mechanisms that should end this response”, explains Professor Susana Sá, responsible for the study, to the FMUP website. . That is, in addition to increasing the expressions of desire, the use of THC made it manifest for a longer time.
Precautions for use
The research, however, clarifies that “very low” doses of THC were used and for a short period, “as if it represented an occasional use of the drug”. For frequent uses and higher doses, the study cannot guarantee that the result would be similar.
Furthermore, the apparent benefit of substance use does not negate the adverse effects of consumption, both on a physical and emotional level. The use of cannabis, doctors warn, can cause addiction, increases the risk of psychoses and can induce “disruptive sexual behavior”, they argue.
