The Marlins made a trade Tuesday, acquiring left-hander José Castillo from the Padres for cash.
Miami immediately sent the pitcher to Triple-A Jacksonville.
Castillo, 27, appeared in a total of 40 games in parts of four seasons with San Diego, posting a 4.24 ERA with 55 strikeouts.
The Valencia native was originally signed by Tampa Bay as an international free agent in July 2012 and was later traded to the Padres in December 2014.
