Marrakech – The film “Thunder”, by Swiss director Carmen Jaquier, was screened on Thursday as part of the official competition of the 19th edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival, organized until November 19 under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
The facts of this 92-minute film take place in the summer of 1900, in a valley in southern Switzerland. Elisabeth, a 17-year-old novice, is about to make her vows when the sudden death of her older sister forces her to leave the convent and return to the family farm she had left five years earlier.
However, Elisabeth is no longer a child. The strict and suffocating rules of the village suffocate her, the mysteries surrounding the disappearance of her sister obsess her and push her to claim her right to have her own experiences.
This feature film, marked by the admirable interpretation of Lilith Grasmug, is Carmen Jaquier’s first film, in which she tries to make women’s voices heard and defend their right to freely express their opinions.
In a speech delivered on the occasion of this preview, the director expressed her great joy to present her first feature film at the Marrakech International Film Festival, adding that she looks forward to the public’s impressions of the film.
Born in Geneva, Carmen Jaquier learned graphic design before making her first short films, then joining the Ecole cantonale d’art de Lausanne (ECAL). His diploma film Le Tombeau des filles received the Pardino d’argento at the Locarno Film Festival (2011).
She then explored image and editing within the Aamen collective and directed two short films, Les Vagues and Le Bal des Sirens. His short film La Rivière sous la langue and the collective feature film Heimatland were selected for the Locarno Film Festival in 2015.
Carmen Jaquier is also the image of the documentary A Bright Light – Karen and the Process by Emmanuelle Antille.

Also in the running are “RED SHOES” (Zapatos rojos) by Carlos Kaiser Eichelmann (Mexico), “PETROL” by Alena Lodkina (Australia), “SAVAGE” (Amina) by Ahmed Abdullahi (Sweden), “SNOW AND THE BEAR” (Kar ve Ayı) by Selcen Ergun (Turkey), “CHEVALIER NOIR” (A Tale of Shemroon) by Emad Aleebrahim Dehkordi (Iran), “THE TASTE OF APPLES IS RED” (Ta’am al-tufah, ahmar ) by Ehab Tarabieh (Syria) and “RICEBOY SLEEPS” by Anthony Shim (Cadana).
