Greece became the 37th country in the world to recognize marriage equality, with the amendment of Article 1350 of the Civil Code and the introduction of the rule that marriage is concluded between two persons of the same or different sexes.

The roll-call vote was conducted electronically and began shortly after 10.30pm on Thursday night, following a two-day debate in the House of Commons.

From New Democracy 107 MPs voted “yes”, 20 “no” and 31 abstained. A total of 20 MPs voted against and 31 chose to abstain. The latter include the 4 government officials, the minister Makis Voridis – and three deputy ministers G. Bougas, St. Keletsis and M. Kefala.

In fact, regarding the result of the roll-call vote, New Democracy executives commented that: “68% voted for ND and 66% for PASOK! Androulakis’s PASOK, which is claiming primacy in the reformist center, had a lower percentage of “yes” votes than the ND.”
