Marseille’s Rupture & Imbernon bookstore, a landmark specializing in architecture and art housed within Le Corbusier’s iconic Cité Radieuse, has entered a judicial reorganization process, according to a statement from the bookstore’s manager, Alexandre Sap.
The move, initiated on February 25th, is described by Sap as a “management act to validate a continuation plan” aimed at addressing a “little debt.” He assured that both the bookstore and its associated publishing house, Editions Imbernon, are not in danger and are prepared to move forward with a planned program of readings and exhibitions.
Rupture & Imbernon recently relocated within the Cité Radieuse to a smaller space with reduced rent, according to Sap. The bookstore was originally founded in 2002 by Katia Imbernon and Jean-Lucien Bonillo, building on their 2001 establishment of Editions Imbernon, which focuses on 20th and 21st-century architecture and urban planning. The bookstore became a partner of Architecture de Collection in 2019.
The current financial difficulties are attributed, in part, to a broader economic climate marked by uncertainty and a reluctance among customers to spend. Sap noted a recent and unusual trend of customers negotiating prices at the checkout, and others reducing their purchases at the last moment. He likewise cited a disappointing turnout for the recent Journées du Patrimoine (Heritage Days) and a 15% decrease in overall visitor numbers to the Cité Radieuse.
The challenges faced by Rupture & Imbernon mirror a wider trend impacting smaller bookstores in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, as highlighted in a February report by the Agence régionale du livre. The report indicated a 20% average decline in revenue for bookstores with a turnover of less than €300,000, coupled with a significant increase in operating costs. Rupture & Imbernon reported a turnover exceeding €150,000 in 2025.
Despite these challenges, the Rupture network, which also includes bookstores in Venice and Tanger, continues to expand. The Venice location, Libreria Rupture Arts & Books Venezia, is slated to move to a larger 60 square meter space near the Fondazione Prada in May, ahead of the 61st Venice Biennale of Art. The expanded store will feature a wider selection of books, including works from independent Italian publishers, Phaidon, and Éditions de la Librairie des Colonnes.
