The idea was born from the will of three people. By Pierre Dharréville, the deputy PCF of the constituency until June 2024, of the historian specialist in the French Revolution Pierre Serna, and Jean-François Szymanski, owner of the L’Alinéa bookstore in Martigues. The municipality immediately supported the project and it now takes its successful form after a sort of publishing ” zero “ Last year. From May 21 to 25, the town therefore hosts the first real edition of “Pop story”with conferences, film screenings, exhibitions and theater.
Everything started from a “Common observation on the erasure of history in public space”explains Pierre Dharréville who raises a paradox while “Its manipulation and instrumentalization have developed”. Pierre Serna abounds in this direction. “The story of history, and more particularly that of the history of France, is often monopolized by conservative, even openly reactionary people, or by people who are not historians in the university sense of the term”he deplores. Hence a “First motivation”which consists of “Do not reproduce what the Puy du Fou offers, for example, that is to say a spectacular and oriented staging in history. On the contrary, we wanted to create a popular party in history ». The historian defines it as “A story that is simply expressed – but not in a simplistic way. It is a clear story, understandable by all. And above all, it is a story shared with the greatest number ”.
“We would like to make us lose our memory”
The city of Martigues has established itself as the ideal place: a city without university, but with a strong political will to never sacrifice culture to social action. The town hall voted a budget, made available to the rooms (Chapel de l’Annonciade, cinema La Cascade, Théâtre des Salins, Musée Ziem) and municipal staff. The communist mayor, Gaby Charroux, shares the approach of the three designers of “Pop story”. “In a world that turns at full speed, where we would sometimes like to make us lose our memorywrites the councilor, We need to reclaim our story. It is not a question of staying locked in the past but of making the desire to know and share it. Simply because it is essential to us to understand, to learn and to imagine the future ”. Pierre Serna also greets the involvement of the University of Aix-Marseille: “The colleagues played the game perfectly, without them it would not have been possible”.
The theorian theorist of “The extreme center” Will also be at the heart of one of the highlights of this festival, on Saturday May 24 at 11 am in the Chapel of the Annunciade, during a debate with Johann Chapoutot, specialist in Nazism. His latest book, The irresponsibledissect the role of “Authoritarian liberals” in Hitler’s accession to power.
The Mediterranean will also be at the center of several events during these five days of “Pop story”with in particular a meeting on ancient migration on May 24 at 5 p.m. at the Annonciade Chapel. The entire programming is available on the website of the Martigues town hall.

As close as possible to those who create
Humanity has always claimed the idea that Culture is not a commoditythat it is a condition of political life and human emancipation.
Faced with liberal cultural policies, which weaken the public service of culture, the newspaper reports on the resistance of creators and all the staff of culture, but also the solidarity of the public.
The unusual, daring, singular biases are the trademark of the newspaper’s culture pages. Our journalists explore behind the scenes of the world of culture and the genesis of works which make and jostle the news.
Help us defend an ambitious idea of culture!
