PITTSBURGH – The Pirates strengthened their pitching on Friday, signing the Venezuelan left-hander Martin Perez to a one-year contract. The deal is for $8 million, a source told MLB.com.
Pérez, like Marco Gonzales – acquired from the Braves this winter – is a veteran who would provide a positive influence in the clubhouse and the ability to make 30 or more starts in a season.
In 2022, Pérez was called to the All-Star Game, when he went 12-8 with a 2.89 ERA in 196.1 innings. In 2023, the pitcher had an earned run average of 4.45 in 141.2 innings.
