The number of Covid-19 cases is exploding in Martinique with 1,842 contaminations recorded in the last 48 hours. However, the prefect Stanislas Cazelles assured that everything would be done to avoid confinement.
Invited on the local radio RCI, the prefect judged the current situation “very critical, very hard”. “We are continuously examining the measures,” he added while the curfew, put in place last July at the start of the fourth wave, is still in force in the territory from 8 pm to 5 am.
According to the latest figures published by the prefecture, the incidence rate soared with 1948 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and the positivity rate reached 15.5%. The number of tests carried out in Martinique is also exploding with 45,000 tests carried out during the week of January 3 to 9, 2022.
“A tailor-made in Martinique”
According to a press release from the Regional Health Agency, the Omicron variant now represents half of the cases. A situation which pushes the population, resistant to vaccination, to take the plunge.
Since January 1, 1,524 people have received their first dose, an average of 200 to 300 people each day. “This is the strongest record for two months, which shows that in times of crisis, people are turning to vaccination, and they are right,” said the prefect on RCI.
Under these conditions, the prefecture hopes that the dynamics of vaccination will continue and make it possible to avoid a new confinement. As for the vaccination pass, which should come into force on January 17 in France, “there will be a tailor-made in Martinique”, declared Stanislas Cazelles while the territory remains today in a state of health emergency until March 31, 2022.
