Marvel: Thor’s Hammer Really Exists

Fans of Marvel Studios films were somewhat surprised to hear that the hammer of Thor, the god of thunder, actually exists. In effect, an American engineer has managed to design a hammer that has the same characteristic as the real Mjolnir of the King of Asgard.

The Origin and History of Mjolnir, Thor’s Hammer According to Marvel Studios

According to the story imagined by Marvel Studios, Mjolnir is a war hammer that was forged by Dwarven smiths, given as a gift to the Asgardian Royal Family. Mjolnir is known for its powers which make it possible to perfect the manipulation of the elements of its user who is none other than Thor Odinson. In the very beginning, Thor’s hammer was wielded by the Norse king and god of Asgard, Odin. Before Thor was born, Odin entrusted Mjolnir to Hela, his eldest daughter, but after the latter’s imprisonment, the hammer was given to Thor.

In Marvel Studios’ Avengers films and spin-offs, the hammer is Norse god Thor Odinson’s primary weapon until Hela was freed upon Odin’s death. Indeed, in the movie Thor Ragnarok, Mjolnir was destroyed by Hela during a fight. With the hammer torn to pieces, Mjolnir was brought back to the village of New Asgard and used as a tourist item.

In the movie Avengers Endgame, Thor manages to bring back Mjolnir, his hammer, after traveling back in time to the year 2013, four years before the coming of Hela and the death of her father, the Norse god Odin. During the war against Thanos and his army, Thor’s hammer was wielded by Captain America, the leader of the Avengers. Once Thanos was defeated, Captain America brought Thor’s hammer back to Asgard around the year 2013. However, as Jane was ill, she found it difficult to bear the powers of the hammer. After the death of Jane Foster which was caused by an ultimate confrontation against Gorr the Butcher of the Gods, Mjolnir returned to the Norse god Thor.

The Origin of Thor’s Hammer According to Norse Mythology

It should be emphasized that Marvel Studios tapped into Norse mythology to perfect Thor’s story, the origin of Thor’s hammer is quite similar. Indeed, according to Norse mythology, Mjolnir was made by dwarves from Nidavellir. The warhammer was crafted from a special metal called uru, a material found only in the realm of Nidavellir. Resembling stone, uru is a material that can both store and absorb the energy around it. The story goes that the dwarven smiths couldn’t melt uru and used heat from a star to melt it, giving rise to Thor’s hammer which they named Mjolnir. The dwarves thus offered the hammer Mjolnir to the Norse God Odin to seal an alliance between Asgard and Nidavellir.

In comics, Thor’s hammer is called Uru, a name Stan Lee’s brother gave when Thor was first introduced to the comic book universe. Indeed, if at the beginning, Stan Lee’s brother decided to call him by his real name Mjolnir; he finally wanted to adapt a rather original style and a little different from Norse mythology to choose to name it Uru.

The real hammer of Thor according to Allen Pan

An American engineer, a fan of Marvel Studios films, decided to design the hammer of Thor, one of the members of the Avengers, on his own. He even wants to make the hammer building on Mjolnir’s main feature, making him the only person who can lift it.

Thus, the American engineer named Allen Pan wants to take on the challenge of designing Thor’s hammer with these characteristics in the Marvel Studios films. Thereby, he deployed all his skills and made sure that he was the only person who could lift him. Indeed, according to the movies and Norse mythology, only the Asgardian god and king Thor can lift Mjolnir.

Because of this, Allen Pan successfully completed his challenge and now has a hammer which is a carbon copy of Thor’s hammer. Indeed, the engineer added:

  • Powerful electromagnets inside the hammer;
  • Microwave components to allow Thor’s hammer to stick to surfaces made of metal or steel.

To make it even more original, the engineer added a fingerprint reader to the sleeve of his Mjolnir so that only he could lift it.

The origin of Thor’s Hammer can change depending on the story, source, and context one relies on. Also, this exploit of Allen Pan, who succeeded in designing his own Mjolnir, can be added to the multiple versions concerning this famous hammer of Thor.
