Marvin and Friends: Exploring the Aerostar Community in Los Angeles

This new photo column will be published every Sunday from today and shows my everyday life in Los Angeles. No superlatives, just everyday views of the city. Los Angeles not as a cosmopolitan city but as an urban village. Today is about Marvin, my beloved Ford Aerostar and his friends.

Marvin is my second Ford Aerostar van. Namely the dark red “Eddie-Bauer Deluxe-Edition”, vintage 1990. My first Aerostar was the short, windowless delivery van version (“Cargo-Van”) in white, which was towed to its final resting place in 2017. The new one sat in a garage in Beverly Hills for years and was used once a year to drive the kids to boys scout camp. His purchase was such a good deal that I christened him “Marvin” after the previous owner. Marvin was a faithful companion through the streets of Los Angeles, but also promoted me to Tuscon, Arizona on several occasions.

Marvin prefers to hang out in San Pedro, the port district of Los Angeles. There is an unusual concentration of other Aerostars in all possible designs and conditions. First Marvin was a glittering superstar, but over the years he adapted to his slightly ailing environment. The sun and salt bleached the paint, the potholes shifted the track and the valet ruined the bumpers. Once even at 40 miles per hour. Incidentally, that’s no reason for us to leave your business card behind the windshield wiper. We call this a “San Pedro handshake.”

Marvin just kept driving, but got used to parking with good company. Therefore he sought the proximity of other Aerostars. My image gallery documents the pack behavior of the local Aerostar population. Either Marvin or his predecessor can be seen in the photos – always with a local conspecific.
