Mary Broadcast: A Musical Journey of Empowerment, Resilience, and Equality

After a long musical journey, singer Mary Broadcast and her three band members have arrived in the indie pop-rock genre with the new EP “PANIC”. In a cycle of six songs and six videos, the concept album tells the painful but also inspiring story of a woman who has to rearrange her inner and outer world after a miscarriage. The concert was correspondingly moving. Rock numbers were represented as well as quiet, fragile tones.

The Upper Austrian native impressed with her voice, naturalness and appealing stage performance. However, their roots, and those of the band, lie in jazz. Later it moved towards blues, soul and pop. The song “How Can You Ask Me” with which she took part in the song contest preliminary round in 2012 was also in this style. Back then, the band “Trackshittaz” won, and they were the last to be eliminated in the song contest semi-finals with their pop wobbly song. However, participation in Mary Broadcast’s preliminary competition ensured that the band received great media exposure for some time. But at some point they wanted to get rid of the song contest image again. “We have once again reoriented ourselves musically. With independent, non-commercial music,” says Mary.

The singer is also interested in other female musicians. With the series “HER – Talk & Music” she gives musicians and artists a platform to make themselves visible. “We talk about life as a woman who is also a musician, or mother and musician, and how that can be reconciled,” she explains. She also still experiences discrimination on stage, with some sound engineers automatically addressing male musicians about technical issues. But she was confident that a lot would happen in the near future regarding equality for women. She is more worried about what is happening in other countries. Here you should take a closer look. In the next talks she wants to invite refugee women who couldn’t be like us in their countries.
