There are career paths that emerge very early in a person’s life. Same with Mary Pommer. According to her own statements, the way to a musical career was clear to her early on: “I’ve been singing since elementary school, and then my parents realized that I liked it.”

Around ten years she was from the Jennersdorferin Andrea Werkovits – meanwhile director of the music school – teaches.

After graduating from high school in Jennersdorf, she completed a voluntary social year at a primary school in Graz, after which she began studying music to become a teacher at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz.

What could never be missing: solo performances, bands and many other music projects. With her first EP “Three Seasons” she now wants to show off. A lot of work, time and passion went into her debut work.

“It was definitely an effort behind it, but I got off Lukas Sulzer, a great colleague of mine, got a lot of support. He had very cool connections to studio musicians from Vienna,” explains Pommer. They drove specially from Vienna to Graz to record there.

It’s “casual what becomes of the songs when there are lots of professionals playing the instruments”. Mary Pommer also plays the piano herself, but this time she left it to a pianist from Jamaica. The EP also sounds international when you listen to it. There are three fundamentally different songs on it. A ballad, a protest song and a love song.

Worked on the record for a year

She worked on the record for almost exactly a year. The lyrics and melodies are her own, “the rest of the musicians have taken what is there and developed it” – music professionals. The result? A lot of soul on the disc.

Of course, the big dream still remains of earning her own bread with music one day. “The goal would be to make ends meet,” explains the young singer.

She currently teaches singing alongside her studies. The potential profession as a music teacher is of course tempting as a financially secure mainstay. “It’s difficult to make a breakthrough with music,” says Pommer.

At least there is no shortage of performances at the moment. Mary Pommer is currently on duty almost every weekend. “I’m happy about that and it’s my dream anyway, but I had to slow down my studies a bit so that everything worked out. The focus is clearly on the music and I now have the feeling that I’ve got something rolling there,” explains Pommer hopefully.

In Burgenland she already performed in Schloss Tabor (District Jennersdorf), in summer an open-air concert is planned in Heiligenkreuz im Lafnitztal.

Also active in Grazer Band

In addition to her career as a solo singer, Mary Pommer is also with the Grazer Band „Livin Vintage“ vocally active. “I met the guys during my studies and we were already at the Styrian Sound Festival in Graz,” explains the lead singer.

The music is a mixture of funk and indie pop, with slight jazz influences. The release of the second album is planned for autumn.

Above all, she wants to process personal events with her songs: “I only write my songs from experiences, it is one self therapy for me. If I have a problem, I go to the piano and let it out.” The keys would also look a bit battered by now.

“Better to sing than talk about it”

She is happy to be able to reveal something about her life. “I prefer singing to talking about it,” explains the 22-year-old. “A lot of people keep journals about therapy. It’s similar for me, except that at some point an album might come out of it,” laughs Pommer. That is also the big plan, albeit a difficult one. Producing a quality album is expensive. For the EP she has support from SKE Fund get: “Without that, it would have been very difficult if you want to pay the musicians fairly.”
