A fire broke out late Tuesday afternoon in a warehouse in the Brussels municipality of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, leading to the evacuation of a neighboring banquet hall, where a wedding bringing together around two hundred guests was taking place. . “Around 5:50 p.m., the emergency center received several calls concerning a fire in a village hall on rue Delaunoy in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean,” says fire brigade spokesperson Walter Derieuw. Significant resources were dispatched to the scene by firefighters.
When emergency services arrived, it turned out that the fire did not concern the village hall, but the neighboring warehouse. However, the smoke from the fire spread into the banquet hall.
“With the help of the Brussels West police zone (Jette/Ganshoren/Koekelberg/Molenbeek-Saint-Jean/Berchem-Sainte-Agathe), we evacuated the room, while our teams tackled the fire” , continues the spokesperson for the firefighters. “We also carried out a large search operation, but found no one else. One person was slightly injured and taken to hospital.”
The fire was eventually brought under control, but the damage to the warehouse was significant. The exact cause of the disaster is still not known.
