A massive search continues for a missing radioactive cesium device in Australia. The round white capsule shaped device is extremely dangerous. Authorities have warned people that exposure to the missing substance could have serious consequences, including fatal illness.

Western Australia’s Chief Health Officer and Radiological Counselor, Dr. Andrew Robertson Chair said. The radioactive cesium 137 inside the capsule is dangerous. According to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, the capsule was trucked by road on January 10 for storage. It reached Perth on 16 January. But on January 25, when the pack was opened for inspection, it was found that the capsule was missing.

At present around six hundred kilometers have been searched for the device. The Australian military, nuclear department and police agencies are conducting the inspection. Australia’s Nuclear Regulatory Agency is also involved in the search. The screening is done with portable radiation detection equipment. Teams of radiation service specialists and imaging equipment have also been deployed. Authorities have also warned the public to keep a distance of five meters if the device is found.

Australian police say they have not confirmed how the device was lost, but believe it may have fallen from the truck. If the capsule is taken in hand or kept close to it, the radioactive potential from it can cause serious diseases.
