France is battling an unprecedented wildfire season that has forced more than 220,000 people to flee the Gironde region. Bonichot and her family eventually found refuge at a huge exhibition center in Bordeaux converted by city authorities into a temporary shelter. The facility provides camp beds, food, medical services, clothes, and veterinary support for displaced pets, including Bonichot’s dog and rabbit.

Beyond the sheer scale of the displacement, the fires are exhibiting behavior never before documented in France. French authorities confirmed that a pyrocumulonimbus, commonly known as a fire-cloud, had been observed near Bordeaux.

While meteorologists can identify atmospheric conditions that favor the formation of pyrocumulonimbus clouds, Jean-Christophe Vincendon, wildfire coordinator for the French national meteorological service, noted that experts cannot predict with precision exactly when or where a fire-cloud will develop.

The crisis in France is part of a wider regional catastrophe. Historic wildfires in Spain have also forced tens of thousands of evacuations, bringing the total number of displaced people across southwest Europe to roughly a third of a million.
Successive heat waves throughout the year have left European forests tinder-dry. Experts warn that human-caused climate change is making such extreme events increasingly probable, threatening economic activity during the peak tourist season and raising profound concerns for future summers.
Bowman characterized the appearance of fire-clouds in Western Europe as an alarming escalation.
