Master’s Degree in Video Games: Training the Next Generation of Game Developers

The Albert Jacquard High School in Namur received a significant number of registrations for the second year of its master’s degree in video games. The establishment had to add three classes at the last minute and refuse registrations. Some students are already taking classes even though their registration is not yet completely in order. “There are a lot of people who register late and it fills up very well. It’s a little unexpected the level of registrations now. We are a bit of a victim of our success“, confides Joël Jacob, director of the Alfred Jacquart high school.

A 360-degree vision of industry professions

In total, more than 300 students are enrolled in the video games course in bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The Namur high school is one of the only ones in Belgium to provide training for professions related to video games. “In our master’s degree, we try to have a 360-degree vision of industry professions. That is to say that our students will touch a little on all the disciplines that are necessary to create a video game.“, indicates Joachim Chapelle, professor of programming and game engines.

Wallonia in a good position

In Wallonia, most of the students trained go abroad or to Flanders and represent around 70% of the turnover generated by the sector in Belgium. The course is internationally recognized and is more educational than courses given via the internet. “There are now a lot of game developers who don’t even have any special training, who will watch tutorials, etc. We try to provide something that is different from that with the sharing of the experience that we have or the things that we know, via students who are in certain boxes spread around the world“, specifies Gil Damoiseau, video game designer.

Diversified outlets

The sector is booming and offers new opportunities, and not only in video games. For example, aviation is looking for specialists to create flight simulators, just like Formula 1.
