Reacher Star Calls Out matt Gaetz in Fiery GQ Interview

Alan Ritchson, star of Amazon Prime Video’s popular series Reacher, recently made headlines after calling former U.S. representative Matt Gaetz a “motherfucker” in a GQ interview. The actor, who attended high school with Gaetz in florida, expressed strong disapproval of the controversial politician’s actions and political affiliations.

A High School Rivalry Resurfaces

During the GQ conversation, Ritchson revealed that he and Gaetz were both on the Speech and Debate team while in high school. “That motherfucker. We are adversaries,” Ritchson stated.”It’s shocking to me that the panhandle of Florida continues to vote for somebody knowing everything we certainly know about him and the promises that he’s made behind closed doors about pardoning certain criminals — he’s just not a good dude!”

Gaetz, now a prominent figure in conservative politics, responded to Ritchson’s comments on his X (formerly Twitter) accounts. In a series of tweets, he refuted the “adversary” label, highlighting their shared history on the Speech and Debate Team. Gaetz even recalled kind interactions with Ritchson and his family, pointing out that they attended his father’s retirement party.

“spoiler alert: We were not adversaries,” Gaetz wrote. “He’s just trying to get Hollywood attention (but not just with the steroids).”

A Conflict Beyond the Schoolyard

Ritchson’s criticism of Gaetz goes beyond their high school rivalry. In the GQ interview, the actor expressed a desire to enter politics to counteract figures like Gaetz. “A part of me wants to get into politics to outdo somebody like him for good, and there’s part of me that’s like, I’m not duplicitous enough to succeed in politics,” Ritchson admitted.

Gaetz has been embroiled in controversy throughout his political career, facing accusations of child sex trafficking and statutory rape in 2020. Despite a Justice Department inquiry, he was not charged. His tenure as a U.S.Representative ended in 2024, following allegations of sexual misconduct released in a House Ethics Commitee report.

Alan Ritchson: Well, Matt and I were both very competitive back then. We were on opposite sides of the aisle, politically speaking, even in high school. It was clear that we had different views on how things should be done. I guess you could say we were adversaries. It’s just disheartening to see him rise to prominence with his, well, let’s call them ‘questionable’ political affiliations.

Alan Ritchson: I’d say, use your voice. Whether you’re a celebrity or just a concerned citizen, sharing your experiences and opinions can shine a light on important issues. It might feel like you’re only one person, but remember, one person can make a difference.
