In 2022, Jim Bacchi aka Max Boogie and Daren Ford aka Drop Dee launched a small studio project to devote themselves to their passion for stoner rock and boogie rock heaviness. Max Boogie Overdrive quickly developed a life of its own and grew into a full band, which has since devoted itself to the sweet to ponderous riff-heaviness. your first album, „Stoned Again“now lands on its own and makes the arduous import journey more than worthwhile.

The final title song wonderfully sums up the quartet’s likeable peculiarity. After a short sampled intro, a leisurely heaviness emerges, accompanied by hoarse vocals and subtle Sabbath riffing. The boogie parts suddenly creep up, seemingly out of nowhere, and break everything down with increasing enthusiasm. At some point the wild mix finally comes together and creates a real frenzy. On the other hand, the short, crisp “Van Boogie” goes all out from the first second, flexes its muscles and unpacks good old rock – it can sometimes be that simple.

Max Boogie Overdrive really shines in long format. “The Devil Knows My Name” surprises with a little “Hit The Lights” quote in the intro before one of the best riffs on the entire album takes off. Brooding power, stoner-tinged hard rock and an anthemic chorus with a lot of dirt are immediately memorable, including a sprawling guitar solo later. “Freakazoid” ventures even further, slowing down the tempo and playing with classic boogie rock elements. This pleasantly bluesy note fits well with the fuzz and distortion as the band escalates further with each passing minute. The jam character of this giant promises the highest entertainment value.

Woe betide them if they let go: Max Boogie Overdrive cultivate their hypnotizing sound methodically. Of course, this combination is not new, even if you hear boogie rock heaviness a little less often, and yet every single one of these eight songs is really great. “Stoned Again” is an album with powerful riffs, oversized and overwhelming, full of effects pedals, packed to the brim with powerful amplifiers, and yet has its very own charm. Sometimes there’s nothing better than playing air guitar and shaking your hair – a powerful debut that makes you want a sequel.
