“Max the Hitman: A Darkly Humorous Action Film with Quirky Neighbors”

Max (Damiens), in his fifties, is hitman. Discreet, professional, he recently suffered a handicap: he fainted at the sight of a drop of blood. Aware that he must now retire or retrain, he still has one last task to do this: liquidate his bosses. In his arduous quest, he will cross paths with his new neighbors, Karim (William Lebghil) and Stéphanie (Laura Felpin), an honest and uneventful young couple…

In an undemonstrative, almost taciturn role, Damiens quickly finds his marks and the chemistry with his young partners pays off. Cécilia Rouaud practices a cheerful deadpan humor and signs often witty dialogues. The only downside is its somewhat dull production: this original scenario deserved a more inventive staging.

But in a landscape of fairly depressing frank comedies, the film stands out. So let’s not sulk our pleasure.
