Max Verstappen Cleared of Blocking Kevin Magnussen: Stewards’ Decision and Race Updates

2023-06-30 19:01:00

The stewards of the Austrian Grand Prix reviewed the actions of Max Verstappen in the first part of qualifying for a possible blocking of Kevin Magnussen and concluded that the reigning world champion did not block the Haas rider.

The decision of the stewards says that Max saw Kevin, and, having completed a fast lap, took to the left at the exit of the first turn. Magnussen claimed that he had to dodge to the right of Max, and on this he lost speed, but following studying the telemetry and video recordings, the stewards found that Kevin touched the curb in the first turn, and considered that this was the Dane’s loss of speed in the following mini-sectors. The stewards also concluded that Magnussen did not have to “take significant evasive action”.

In addition, the stewards added that this circle of Magnussen was still canceled for violating the boundaries of the track in the tenth turn. However, they were required to investigate a possible blockage.

Thus, no sanctions were applied to Max Verstappen, and he retained first place at the start of the Austrian Grand Prix.
