Max Verstappen wins the F1 Monaco GP followed by Fernando Alonso. Checo Pérez was relegated

The 2023 Monaco GP race did not have much to tell. Unsuccessful overtaking attempts, some contact with the wall and no safety car showing up. And it was until the irruption of the rain. Around lap 52 the chaos began.

Anarchy from which a conservative Max Verstappen emerged victorious, who waited for everyone to make different mistakes to achieve his 39th F1 victory.

Fernando Alonso was close to 33 but the strategy and the weather played a trick on him. A second place that he knows little about, but which is his best race in almost a decade, since the 2014 Hungarian Grand Prix.

In third position stands out the first surprise of the season: Esteban Ocon. The Frenchman demonstrated his talent for fishing in troubled rivers to get what is his third podium in Formula 1.

Intense and frenetic race on the streets of Monaco where both Carlos Sainz (8th) and Checo Pérez (17th) finished with a bad grade, both due to their decision-making and that of their respective teams when reading the conditions and the situation.

Max Verstappen was able to hold the lead from pole position at the start starting on medium tyres, while Fernando Alonso held second over Esteban Ocon despite starting on the hards in his Aston Martin against the Alpine driver’s mediums.

At the back of the grid, Sergio Pérez managed to pass Zhou Guanyu in the first few metres, but then found himself overtaken by the Chinese driver, who took the opportunity to go wide at the Fairmont hairpin as the Mexican got stuck in traffic.

What happened to Checo Pérez?

Checo Pérez’s career was mistake after mistake. The Mexican failed in his second qualifying attempt on Saturday and has been doomed to struggle against all odds ever since. With that anxiety to climb positions, Checo made mistakes more typical of a rookie in the Principality.

First he almost collided with his partner when he was lapping him and, in turn, Max Verstappen, surpassed Stroll at the exit of the tunnel. On the following lap, already with real battles for position, Pérez collided slightly with Hulkenberg and broke his front wing.

Laps later, with the rain present, Russell took it on in a dangerous rejoin. To make matters worse, the Mexican almost ended up on the wall when he reached the pool.

Finally, Checo Pérez crossed the finish line in 16th position.
