Maxi Supermarket in La Malbaie: A New Shopping Experience with Enhanced Offerings and Local Producers

The Maxi supermarket in La Malbaie opened its doors this morning. A long line of customers eagerly awaited this day.

Investments of $4.6 million have been made to convert the old Provigo into “a Maxi 3.0. The look is warmer. The offer is enhanced with ready-to-eat. A place is made for producers in the region,” says Patrick Blanchette, vice-president of operations for Quebec.

Apart from the location, everything has changed in the building, which remains the property of the Lapointe family, which managed the Provigo for many years. “This store is the creme de la creme. For an 18,000 square foot store, product variety is important,” adds Patrick Blanchette.

The Kane Boulevard supermarket offers more than 14,000 products. “We have success wherever we establish ourselves. The price and the quality are there,” continues the VP, visibly proud of what is being delivered to the public today.

Before the doors opened, customers were waiting

Maxi’s image has changed with the pandemic and inflation. The leaders of the chain believe that their listening is much better. Tangible proof of this assertion. The mayor of Saint-Raymond-de-Portneuf contacted the chain to deplore the loss of cretons from the old Provigo. “We contacted the butcher and we have his recipe. Let me tell you that we sell a lot of these greaves, adds Éric Provencher, assistant director, customer relations at Maxi.

We are far from the time when Maxi was considered a rod seller. Today, you can find lamb and even Wagyu beef at the meat counter. Promotions with Charlevoix products are also to come, chain leaders have also indicated.

Gino Pelletier is the store manager. The chain veteran was excited for the big day. “We work hard, but above all we like to feed people,” says the man who runs the supermarket, which employs 60 people.

To mark this opening and demonstrate his desire to actively support the community, Gino Pelletier, store manager, made a donation of $2,500 to La Société-Saint-Vincent-de-Paul.
