Maximizing Impact: The European Skills Pact and the Power of Upskilling and Reskilling

The world is transforming and seeking solutions to its crucial and urgent problems. At the same time, skills mismatch and shortages have been identified by the European Commission as two of the main challenges facing the European Union. To respond, it launched the Skills Pact in 2020, aiming to help organizations maximize the impact of their investments in strengthening skills and reskilling. What is it about?

Upskilling: the asset to evolve

Upskilling refers to learning additional skills in order to be better equipped to perform your job. In a world with a shortage of talent, upskilling allows you to evolve with changes in your profession. Managers have an essential role to play so that their employees remain productive with fulfilling and meaningful work.

In Luxembourg, seven out of ten CEOs have understood this well, having declared that they wanted to invest in upskilling, according to PwC’s 26th Annual Global CEO Survey for 2023. Beyond the productivity aspects, upskilling also has positive effects on corporate culture, work engagement and innovation.

Reskilling: the asset to build loyalty

Requalification or reskilling, for its part, takes place as part of a change of profession or position, or to acquire new managerial skills. The difficulty companies have in recruiting leads to increased recourse to internal mobility and preparation for more flexibility. To remain competitive, they must anticipate the future and think about the transformation of professions which, for some, will become obsolete.

One of the beneficial effects of reskilling, which creates value for both organizations and their teams, is that it contributes to their loyalty. Instead of leaving the organization, employees change positions, acquire new and/or additional responsibilities, and see their motivation reinforced or revitalized.

Training at the heart of the transition

At a time when the United Nations, in the special edition of its “Report on the Sustainable Development Goals 2023” published in July 2023, warns of the weak progress, the lack of progress, or even regression, in certain In this case, sustainable development goals aim to guarantee the rights and well-being of everyone on a healthy and prosperous planet, the transformation of our systems and our economic and social models is essential.

At the heart of this transformation, organizations and their employees play a key role, combining collective and individual actions, with training as a powerful lever for transition. It is in this context that in 2022, IMS Luxembourg created the Sustainability Academy and has since supported organizations in Luxembourg with tailor-made training.
