This year in particular, gift resale is expected to see an unprecedented spike. In any case, this is what a new study carried out by the online sales platform Ebay concludes. Every year, it releases its Christmas gift resale barometer. In recent years, this has mainly been linked to a question of taste. This year, financial necessities linked to inflation could be the main culprits. The money recovered would then be used instead to save or, worse, to pay bills.
If reselling a Christmas gift given with more or less heart remained taboo in recent years, the year 2023 marks a big switch. The rate of French men and women who plan to resell their gift has never been so high. In fact, 23% are considering it, compared to 17% last year and only 11% in 2011 according to figures published by Ebay, carried out online from October 12 to 16, 2023, among 1,340 adults aged 16 to 64 years old.
Around fifty euros won
Unlike recent years, this approach is financial. According to the study, this phenomenon is particularly marked among “25-44 year olds with children, in regions where purchasing power is lowest.” Indeed, if 72% of French people declared that inflation had already impacted their gift budget in 2023, it is also the main reason for the resale of gifts after the holidays. By doing this, they estimate they will earn on average €49.43. For those who thought about it but felt guilty seeing the gifts given by their loved ones end up on Ebay, here is a comforting figure: 42% of gift givers say they are quite happy to see their loved ones buy a gift they like more.
What are the most resold gifts?
Among the most resold gifts this year, we find Barbies. Then we find High-Tech accessories, such as connected watches and headphones. In third place, we find books. Most of the time, these last two gifts are resold because the person already has them. Same observation for popular video games, like Hogwarts Legacy (Harry Potter), this year. According to Ebay, the best Christmas sales always reflect the… best Christmas sales.
