The Coroner’s Verdict and the Medical Reality
Stephen Diamantoni, a Republican elected coroner since 2007, told Lancaster Online that the baby died at home on August 18, 2026.
The infant presented with a severe underlying genetic condition known as Amish lethal microcephaly. Caused by a mutation in the SLC25A19 gene, this anomaly alters a protein critical for energy-producing mitochondrial enzymes essential for normal brain development. Affecting roughly 1 in 500 babies in Pennsylvania’s Old Order Amish population, the condition typically caps infant life expectancy at approximately six months.
Yet, despite the presence of microcephaly, Diamantoni explicitly confirmed that measles was the proximate cause of death. Kennedy Jr. dismissed the reports. He deflected accountability by pointing to a ruptured spleen in one child—ignoring the clinical reality that a ruptured spleen is a recognized complication of congenital or neonatal measles—while obliquely suggesting that state officials fabricated the fatalities entirely.
Deconstructing the Under-Vaccination Narrative
Anti-vaccine apologists quickly mobilized online spin campaigns, attempting to weaponize the infant’s genetic condition as the sole vector of mortality. Others tried to absolve federal leadership by arguing that the victims belonged to the Amish community, which traditionally declines immunizations for religious reasons.
That premise is demonstrably false.
There is no religious prohibition within the Amish community against receiving the measles vaccine. While the population is undeniably under-vaccinated—with typical measles immunization rates hovering between 10% and 30% across settlements—the barrier is cultural and logistical rather than theological.
Federal Tracking Obstruction and Congressional Apathy
Despite the coroner’s definitive ruling, systemic transparency has stalled at the federal level. At the time of this writing in September 2026, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s official measles tracking portal still displays an asterisk next to the 2026 mortality figures.
According to ongoing investigative reports, these fatalities have faced direct obfuscation under Kennedy’s direction, wrapped in administrative excuses that local coroners had yet to officially verify the etiology. With Diamantoni’s public confirmation, that bureaucratic justification has evaporated. Yet, the federal dashboard remains unedited.
Corrective action ultimately requires intervention from Capitol Hill. Fixing an ideological apparatus at HHS demands legislative oversight, a remedy that remains stagnant as congressional action lags behind the public health crisis.
