Medicine: the Council was left without a quorum in the first call for the election of dean

In the Board of Directors of the Faculty of Medicine of the UNLP, finally, the quorum was not obtained in its first call for the election of dean, which at the moment has as the only candidate the current authority, Professor Juan Ángel Basualdo Farjat, who needs 11 votes of the Board of Directors composed of 16 members.

As anticipated, there were five student counselors and three graduates who missed the Council’s first call. Basualdo Farjat would have so far received 7 favorable votes corresponding to the teaching staff and seeks the support of the students who accompanied him four years ago in the historic election that meant the departure of Hoja de Roble.

The most notable absences were four students from the Peronist group Remediar, which is in charge of the Student Center, and one from the alliance between Vientos de Abajo of Patria Grande and Unite of the PCR. But three graduate representatives of radical extraction openly opposed to the current management of Medicine did not meet either.

According to the statute of the UNLP, for the board of directors to be able to meet in the first call, the presence of the 16 representatives is required. If one is missing, it is passed to Wednesday, when it can be done with a simple majority as long as all the estates that make up the Body are represented. Otherwise, it will meet with a simple majority two days later.

Even with dissimilar arguments, students and graduates point to the faculty, among other reasons, due to the lack of face-to-face practices and the continuity of virtuality. Even the concern motivated a large student assembly on Friday at 120 and 60, where a list of conditions was agreed that includes full attendance as the main demand and that they will seek to bring it closer to the dean tomorrow, when the students plan to meet again.

“There is a lack of places to study and teachers: there are 15 for subjects with 5,000 students. That clearly complicates attendance”, warned Fiorella yesterday, a student who participated in Friday’s assembly.

“The main condition to give a quorum in the Council is that the candidate commits to comply with our demands”, stressed the head of the center of
Medical students, Martina Novoa.

“There is only a dean with the student vote,” they added from Patria Grande, which has a minority on the Council.

Even harsher, from the graduate faculty they directed all the darts against Basualdo and his academic secretary, Mario San Mauro, “mainly responsible for a faculty in complete disorder, semi-closed, without attempts to attend and without an idea of how it is going to be taught. teaching this year”, they fired. That is why he had advanced that they would not give a quorum in the session scheduled for today: “If Basualdo is not re-elected, we must have time to analyze alternatives,” they stressed, and that “the best thing that can happen to the faculty is to elect another professor who leads a transition deanship with the collaboration of all the cloisters towards a better situation to find a minimum order and be able to impart basic knowledge to students without incurring in an unprecedented educational scam”.

Re-elected tie in Dentistry

On the other hand, the Board of Directors of the School of Dentistry met fully, with its 16 members, and Gabriel Lazo was re-elected. It remained in today’s session to know the results in Economics, Veterinary and Observatory.

After the fourfold renewal of authorities at the UNLP, the schedule will take a break until Wednesday, when it will be the turn of Humanities and Psychology.
