The 2023 edition is considered special as this year marks the 30th anniversary of Castle Connolly Top Doctors.
Castle Connolly Medical, an American health care information and research publishing organization, annually publishes a list of the nation’s top doctors in different fields. In the 2023 edition, three Venezuelan doctors appeared in the Top Doctors.
They are doctors Daniel Salerno, Sadia Benzaquen and Eliot Friedman, all three were selected for their outstanding work. They are graduates of the Central University of Venezuela (UCV) and have practiced in major hospitals in the United States.
“Castle Connolly Top Doctors are considered the best doctors in their area of expertise and expertise,” the organization notes on its website.
According to Castle Connolly, with more than 850,000 practicing physicians in the United States, they handpicked a list of more than 63,000 board-certified physicians from all major specialties that make up the network.

Daniel Salerno
Dr. Daniel Salerno graduated in Venezuela in 1997 and completed his training at the Albert Einstein Medical Center and the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He specializes in lung diseases and has experience in Interstitial Lung Disease, Asthma, and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
In Venezuela, he obtained the José Izquierdo Award for Excellence in academic work awarded by the UCV.
Currently, he practices primarily in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, and is affiliated with Temple University Hospital, where he is Director of Intensive Care and Professor in the Department of Thoracic Medicine and Surgery.
Salerno completed three postgraduate degrees in the United States (Internal Medicine, Pulmonology, and Critical Care) and is board certified in pulmonary disease and critical care medicine.
To date, he has published at least 12 investigations in specialized medical journals. In addition, he belongs to the American Thoracic Society and the American College of Chest Physicians.
Sadia Benzaquen
Dr. Sadia Benzaquen studied Medicine at the UCV, where he obtained the award for Best Resident and a score above the 99th percentile in the pulmonary and intensive care exam.
He completed several postgraduate courses in the United States, one in Internal Medicine (at the Albert Eintsein Medical Center) and another in Pulmonary and Critical Care, including Interventional Pulmonology, at the Chicago Chest Center.
Benzaquen serves as Chairman of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at the Einstein Healthcare Network. He is board certified in pulmonology, interventional pulmonology, and critical care medicine.
According to the magazine Perspective of Einstein Healthcare Network, Benzaquen came to that institution in September 2019 from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he was Director of Interventional Pulmonology, Associate Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine, and Director of the Interventional Pulmonology fellowship.
In addition, the Venezuelan doctor is a member of the American College of Chest Physicians, the American Thoracic Society and the American College of Physicians.
Eliot Friedman
Dr. Eliot Friedman, who has more than 23 years of experience in the area of Intensive Care and pulmonary diseases, graduated from UCV in 1999. Throughout his career, he has earned several Honors and awards such as the Pennsylvania Thoracic Society, Albert Einstein Medical Center Department of Medicine Member Award.
Like Benzaquen, Friedman scored above the 99th percentile on the pulmonary and intensive care exam.
Friedman specializes in lung diseases, intensive care medicine, and sleep medicine. He is affiliated with Lankenau Medical Center and is currently the medical director of the Paoli Hospital Sleep Medicine Center in Pennsylvania.
Castle Connolly details that American doctors are in charge of nominating their peers for the Top Doctors list. These are then thoroughly examined by the organization’s research team.
