Memorable volcanologists

CINEMA OF TOMORROW

On this occasion we are going to talk about “Inner fire; Requiem for Katia and Maurice Kraft” by Werner Herzog, which narrates the experiences of a couple passionate about eruptions.

Although it had already been shown previously at some festivals, “Fuego interior; Requiem for Katia and Maurice Kraft” by Werner Herzog is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the LXXV International Film Festival.

The notable director of “The Cave of Forgotten Dreams” and “Aguirre, the Wrath of God” had access to the film archive of these volcanologists who died on June 3, 1991, when the Unzen volcano erupted in Japan.

With great skill, the German director takes us into the history of this marriage, which began with scientific interest and which little by little became a couple of authentic filmmakers. Maurice even confesses that he is not afraid to die after everything he has seen.

The Krafts witnessed eruptions in various parts of the world, in Chichonal, Nevado del Ruiz, and in Hawaii.

Little by little we see them become aware and turn their eyes towards the victims of the eruptions, putting a human side to their film portraits.

However, its never-before-seen images make for a fascinating spectacle.

Herzog had to select from the more than 200 hours of footage, the most beautiful and representative ones.

“The fire within; “a requiem for Katia and Maurice Kraft” won the special Jury prize at the Gijón Festival and in Shanghai and Los Angeles; Well, it is a film that should not be missed for any reason.

Fact: The Krafts witnessed eruptions in various parts of the world, in Chichonal, Nevado del Ruiz, and in Hawaii.

Little by little we see them become aware and turn their eyes towards the victims of the eruptions, putting a human side to their film portraits.
